Rock solid towards the sky
With its robust white tower, the Reformed Church of Tiszafüred stands out from a distance. During its restoration, one of the largest Romanesque churches of the Central Tisza region, built in the early 13th century, was discovered in the south-eastern side wall of the church.
The tower standing in front of the west façade of the single-nave church building dates back to 1738, the fire shouting balcony around the top, recessed level of the tower was completed in 1883, and there is a vestibule in front of the south and east façades. At each end of the nave, with a cantilevered vaulted ceiling, there is a wooden-framed gable (1860) with a painted coffered ceiling at the bottom. The barrel vault of the nave is closed on the east side with shuttered sections. Below the tower, there is a Bohemian vault.
Church furnishings
It originates from the first half of the 19th century. The pulpit was built in neoclassical style with gilded decoration. In front of the Moses bench and around the altar, there is a painted fence with a puppet railing in the historicist style (1870).
The organ was built in 1869 by the famous organ builder of the time, Lajos Mooser.
Life of the church today
The services of the Tiszafüred Reformed Parish in the city are wide-ranging. They run a school and a kindergarten, but there is also a women’s association, a choir and a children’s choir operated in the congregation. Children are taught agricultural skills and environmental awareness in the school’s educational garden and greenhouse. In addition to the arts (ceramics, vitreous enamel, dance and painting), robotics is also taught, with a 3D printer and a multifunctional robot park.
The congregation is served by two pastors (a married couple). There are Bible classes, prayer classes, home worship, mid-week worship and Sunday morning and afternoon services held.
In the spring of 2022, the church’s new digital chimes (bell system) was completed. Every even hour from Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 20:00, you can hear Psalms 35 and 81, and Canticles 210 and 255 for 1 minute.
